RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Do not apply Mapegum WPS if the temperature is lower than +5°C.
  • Create sloping surfaces where necessary to avoid the formation of puddles of water.
  • Do not apply Mapegum WPS on damp cementitious substrates or on substrates which are subject to rising damp.
  • Do not use Mapegum WPS on surfaces continuously immersed in liquid such as swimming pools, fountains, storage tanks, etc.
  • Do not use Mapegum WPS to cover cracks.
  • Mapegum WPS must be protected from abrasion caused by pedestrian traffic by installing ceramic tiles or stone material.
  • Do not use over painted surfaces

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Preparation of the substrate

Substrates must be solid, clean, dry and free of oil, grease, old paintwork or any other material which could affect the bond. When it is applied on existing ceramic coatings, accurately check if the substrate is sound, and clean all the mould, loose material, etc. Cementitious substrates must be stable and dry, and not subject to rising damp.

Allow the following minimum drying times before commencing waterproofing/tiling:

  • Gypsum plaster - 4 weeks (1 week for skim coats to plasterboard)
  • Sand: cement render - 2 weeks
  • Concrete - 6 weeks

Ensure that all construction boards are well secured and rigid with no protruding fixings and that proprietary boards are installed as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Substrates which are highly absorbent or gypsum-based must be pre-treated with Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer (ensure thorough penetration). Wait 30 minutes to 2 hours until the coating of Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer is completely dry.

Polished gypsum plaster must be perfectly dry sanded, cleaned and treated with the Shower Waterproofing Kit Primer.

Existing substrates of ceramic tiles or natural stone must be treated with a neat coat of Eco Prim T Plus (sold separately) primer before applying Mapegum WPS.

Application of the product

In order to guarantee continuity in the Shower Waterproofing Kit, we recommend placing Shower Waterproofing Tape to form elastic joints between internal wall angles and board joints, around pipe penetrations and at junctions between wall and bath/shower tray.

Carefully cut the enclosed Shower Waterproofing Tape to the correct size using a sharp knife or scissors. Where a showertray, GRP shower base or bath is used, thoroughly degrease the edges to be waterproofed with a suitable solvent such as acetone.

Lightly abrade the contact area and wipe again with the solvent. Do not prime the GRP surfaces.
Using a brush apply a narrow strip of Mapegum WPS (slightly wider than the Shower Waterproofing Tape) to the areas (including shower trays and bases).

When applying Shower Waterproofing Tape to the shower base / bath cut one side of the scrim edge from the Shower Waterproofing Tape leaving the grey rubber centre.

Do not cut for other areas e.g. internal wall angles.

Ensure that the waterproof tape sits on the shower base, cut edge outermost, but does not protrude beyond the thickness of the tile finish and its adhesive bed. When installing the Shower Waterproofing Tape ensure the tape site flush to the substrate with no air pockets or crease.

The product Mapegum WPS must be applied evenly in thin coats. Wait until the first coat is dry before applying further coats crossways (1-2 hours according to temperature conditions). The final thickness of Mapegum WPS must never be less than 0.8 mm (equivalent to a dry thickness of 0.5 mm), in order to form a consistent, flexible continuous coat. Make sure that there are no gaps caused by imperfections in the substrate.

After 12-24 hours from applying the final coat of Mapegum WPS (according to temperature conditions), the surface is ready for laying ceramic tiles or natural stone, etc.

Use an adhesive from the MAPEI range to lay ceramic tiles and natural stone; class C2 if it is cementitious based or class D2TE if it is a water dispersion type, in accordance with standard EN 12004.

Laying the tiles

After installing the Shower Waterproofing Kit wait:

  • 12-24 hours on absorbent substrates;
  • 4-5 days on substrates which are not absorbent.

Lay the tiles using an adhesive from the MAPEI range (such Keraquick S1, Adesilex P9 or Keraflex Maxi S1); the width of the joints depends on the size of the tiles to be laid.

Grout the tile joints using Ultracolor Plus, Keracolor FF or with Kerapoxy or Kerapoxy CQ, available in a variety of colours
Expansion joints must be sealed using either Mapesil AC or Mapesil LM silicone sealants.
